Renowned American magician Franz Harary is awed by Indian magic, but feels that magicians in the country have not been able to tap the opportunities available here. In Gurgaon to perform before the Indian audiences, Harary feels it is high time Indian magicians stopped emulating the West and promoted the original form of magic that has its roots in the country.
India gave birth to magic thousands of years ago.
That magic then traveled to Europe and America. But sadly, it stopped developing further here and is in a stagnant state even till now. Magicians here have failed to embrace the real magic and present before the audience what is essentially American magic. That is the reason why, magic has started losing its charm in India, Harary told TOI.
The guru of magic, who has won rave reviews for setting himself on fire and for making the Taj Mahal disappear before a large audience, says India has come a long way if one talks about technological advancement, and magicians here should make the most of that to create fantastic optical illusions.
Magic, I would say, is a combination of technology and psychology. When I say technology, I mean the infrastructure magicians need to create an optical illusion, and when I say psychology, I mean that magicians need to make the audience believe that the illusion exists. The technology that I have found here in Gurgaon exists nowhere in the world. And I am sure this technology would soon extend to other states as well. With this kind of technology, there is nothing magicians cant do, Harary said.
He added that although magic has lost its charm in India, Indian audiences are still a very enthusiastic lot. If you give them something new, if you stimulate their ever inquisitive mind with something interesting, I am sure they will show interest. I have been receiving a phenomenal response here, not only from the kids, but also from adults, Harary said.
The magician has a special way of making the show interactive for his audience: he involves kids from the audience in his tricks. They are such a pure and honest lot. Kids know no difference between possible and impossible. For them, everything is possible. That is why, I love having them join me when I perform. Their honesty and their ability to believe in even the impossible inspire me, he said.
Harary, who would be performing live before the audiences at Kingdom of Dreams in Gurgaon over the next two months, has his magicians hat full of surprises for India.
When it comes to magic, this is the country where I stop. India is full of surprises, it is an unbelievable land. As my salute to this magical country, I will present the audiences here with tricks that are authentically Indian, Harary said.
